A Few of my Favorite Things…
I love a great “find.” Books and and movies I’ve never heard about that keep me glued to the page or screen. Vacation destinations so beautiful, relaxing or exciting that I want to go back again and again. People who spend their days doing fun, interesting, unique or admirable things. Check back here from time to time to read my recommendations or to see what I’ve discovered. I would also love to hear your recommendations. Email me with your favorites.

WONDERFUL READS - (Warning: I have very eclectic taste in fiction!)

My Sister’s Keeper, Jodi Picoult - I have heard of Jodi Picoult for years but have only recently read any of her books. She is definitely on my list of favorite authors now! Ms. Picoult has a beautiful literary style that is very readable, and her plotlines focus on incidents you might read in the headlines. This wonderful, heartbreaking story about a family dealing with a life-threatening disease of one of its members, and the effect it has on all of them, had me riveted to the page until the wee hours of the morning. This is the sort of storyline you will discuss and debate with your friends long after you reach ‘The End.’

Intensity, Dean Koontz - Oh my gosh. This is one of the most frightening novels I’ve ever read, with one of the strongest, most admirable heroines I’ve ever met. What makes it even scarier is the fact that it isn’t supernatural like so many of Mr. Koontz’s novels. The plotline involves a monster, yes, but a human one! Enough said! Read it with the lights on!

The Book Thief, Markus Zusak - A beautiful World War II story told from the point of view of a young German girl and written by an amazingly talented young author. I loved this book.

MESMERIZING MOVIES

LIFE AS A HOUSE
I like everything about this movie. It’s a family/relationship drama about a man rebuilding a house that contains some painful memories while, at the same time, rebuilding his relationships with his son and ex-wife. Yes, it’s a tearjerker, but it also contains many unexpected surprisingly funny moments. And it’s not fluffy sweet; the characters are dealing with several serious edgy issues that are not glossed over. Kevin Kline’s performance is outstanding.

FRENCH KISS
I’m on a Kevin Kline kick. He’s funny and charming in this romantic comedy co-starring Meg Ryan. A bit over the top…okay, more than a bit…but this is a real feel-good movie.

FUN GETAWAYS - Places worth visiting.

This summer, my husband and I spent a week with good friends in one of our favorite spots in Mexico (on the Yucatan Peninsula). Thank goodness we made it there and back before hurricane season brought another close call to this gorgeous area. We love the people, the food, and the beautiful water and scenery. While there, I celebrated my birthday – one that ends in a 0. (Don’t ask!)

The walk to the beach.

Our bungalow home for the week.

Biker friends Mark and Michelle on our day-trip scooter ride.

Jeff and me saying "adios" to a great time.
A cute little boy who knew how to have fun in the sun.

INTERESTING PEOPLE (Women, mostly! Not that men aren’t interesting…)

I recently became acquainted with a sixteen-year-old young lady whose talent, drive and ambition amaze me. Her name is Christen Reighter and she is a poet, a writer of short fiction, a budding novelist, and an artist. Oh, and she's a journalist, too! She and some of her classmates have started a literary magazine at their high school, and the first issue will be published in May, 2007. Stop by her website-in-progress at writtenrealm.com and treat yourself to some samples of her poetry and short fiction. And keep checking back to see her art work that will soon be featured there as well!
